The District Attorney is an independently elected public official whose powers and duties are set forth in ยง 700 of the County Law. They have the sole responsibility for the prosecution of all crimes and offenses which occur within Ulster County. The DA’s office partners with local, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies with a common goal to promote public safety and protect the people and property in our community.
The District Attorney is Ulster County’s chief law enforcement officer. The duties of this office include, but are not limited to:

Keeping Ulster County Safe
The Office of the Ulster County District Attorney is led by District Attorney Emmanuel C. Nneji, who was elected in November 2023 and assumed office in January 2024.
The Office staffs 20 Full-Time Assistant District Attorneys, 6 Part-Time Assistant District Attorneys, investigators, and support personnel at the main office located at the Ulster County Courthouse in Kingston and across the five other locations in Ulster County.
Working with local police departments, the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police and other state and federal agencies, the Office of the District Attorney investigates and prosecutes criminal cases while also providing valuable resources and assistance to victims of crime. The Office also does year-round outreach to schools, local law enforcement, community organizations and advocacy groups to improve public safety for Ulster County residents and visitors alike.
